The primary reason for Software Process Improvement initiative to fail lies in an inadequate start. Aspects like commitment, vision, communication, incentives needs to be considered upfront and performed consequently. These are key elements that relate to change management i.e. the soft parts of any initiative that are often left aside. This tutorial aims at providing the audience with concrete steps and hints, how to get started. To be concrete, the CMMI® Maturity Model will be used as the reference model although the ideas can be applied with any kind of reference model. The generic goals and practices i.e. the institutionalization part of the CMMI Model will be emphasized. The tutorial will alternate between some theory, examples and some exercises/discussion with the audience.
